Nipple Tattoos after Breast Cancer – FAQ.

Permanent Nipple Tattoos after Breast Cancer can help you to reach the end of your Breast Cancer journey. Permanent Nipple Tattoos won’t fade away, allowing you to put treatment behind you and move forward into the future.

I really wanted to address some of common questions and misinformation around permanent Nipple Tattoos after Breast Cancer as there is a lot of confusion out there on the internet and I appreciate it can be hard to find the information you need. I’m going to try and answer some of the most common questions I get asked or that I come across. I am always happy to answer any questions so please get in touch if you have something specific you need to find out.

About Me

My name is Helen Aldous. I am an Artistic & Medical Tattooist who specialises in creating permanent 3D Nipple Tattoos for people who have gone through the trauma of Breast Cancer, Mastectomy and Reconstructive Surgery. I also work with people who have undergone gender transition surgery to ensure they feel comfortable in their body. My studio is based in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. Conveniently located for Manchester, Bradford, Leeds and Sheffield.

My background is that I am a practicing artist and completed a professional Tattoo Apprenticeship, having been a qualified and registered Tattooist since 2013. I am also a qualified Medical Tattooist, being certified in both medical tattoo for areola and scars and burns. This allows me to combine the industry standards of Medical Tattoo with the art and craft of Traditional Artistic Tattooing to best help my clients.

Are Permanent Nipple Tattoos after Breast Cancer really Permanent?

There is a lot of confusion out there about 3D Nipple Tattoos and how long they last. All the nipples I create are truly permanent and won’t fade away. I think it is crucial that people are free to put cancer behind them and move forward with their lives without having to revisit their trauma every year or so or pay for more top ups going into the future.

I have had ladies come to me who thought they were getting permanent 3D Nipples tattooed elsewhere by micro-pigmentation technicians and were upset when they found they faded away after a few months. The confusion lies in the words the beauty/cosmetic/micropigmentation Industry uses. “Permanent Makeup” is called “permanent” as it is more permanent than makeup that you take off every night. However, it is not “permanent” in the recognised use of the word {ie lasting forever}.

This subtle use of words has caused confusion for people trying to get a truly permanent 3D Nipple Tattoo which will last without top ups. Always make absolutely sure that the person you go to is using truly permanent ink and not Micropigmentation ink. There are some cosmeticians creating beautiful 3D Nipples but it pays to clarify what inks they are using and how long they will last before booking in to avoid disappointment if you are looking for permanent 3D Nipples.

In general. If it isn’t specifically stated that the technician uses permanent pigment, its very probably semi-permanent. Always ask to see healed photos of work to see how the nipples will look over time and to get an idea of pigment retention. If you click here you can view a gallery of Healed Photos of Nipple Tattoos completed here in my studio

I had my nipples tattooed by my nurse but they faded away. Why doesn’t the NHS offer Permanent 3D Nipples?

It really comes down to a matter of training. Currently Nurses, Surgeons and Micropigmentation Technicians attend a two or three day course on tattooing with semi permanent pigments and equipment. Tattooing permanent 3D Nipples requires different skills, inks and specialist higher powered equipment with which to apply it, as well as artistic skill. To use this equipment on delicate and scarred skin without causing damage requires years of training and experience of dealing with different skin and scar types. This isn’t easily gained other than through a rigorous 2 year professional Tattoo Apprenticeship and constant tattoo work on different skin types. It simply can’t be learnt quickly over two or three days. Therefore the NHS uses the equipment and techniques which can be learnt quickly and without experience.

There are some nurses and surgeons creating some wonderful work but sadly NHS Nipples will fade as the pigments aren’t permanent. Nipples I create are permanent. You can find out why here.

Are Permanent Inks safe after Breast Cancer?

It has been implied that semi permanent inks are safer and that permanent inks are not and do not comply to regulations. This is simply not true. All inks, permanent and semi permanent have to comply to strict EU regulations or they can’t be sold in the UK.

Both Permanent Inks and Micropigmentation Inks are covered by the same General Product Safety Directive in the EU. This means both types of ink are covered by the same rules.

I use top quality inks from a respected ink manufacturer in the US. Each bottle is EU Certified and CPNP {Cosmetic Product Notification Portal} Registered. The company website and download has a Material Data Safety Sheets for each ink. This gives a breakdown of the ingredients in the ink and any known toxicities.

Under Toxiological Information they note  Carcinogenicity: None per OSHA, IARC or NTP

I have been told that permanent ink will discolour and go blue in time and this is why I shouldn’t have a permanent 3D Nipple. Is that true?

Tattoo inks in the past {30-50 years ago} were made with some dubious or unstable ingredients and could change colour strangely as anyone who has seen an old navy tattoo on an elderly relative can testify. However, modern ink manufacturing is a completely different entity. Pigments are scientifically created to withstand the test of time with no colour shifts and will not go blue over time. The range of pigments I use is made by a respected ink manufacturer and are designed for colour stability. In contrast semi-permanent Micropigmentation pigments can have a tendency to go ashy or orangey over time as they fade through different tones and leave the body.

Can a Permanent Tattoo damage the implant I have?

No. In both permanent and semi permanent tattooing, the needle only penetrates a very short distance into the skin. The maximum depth for permanent tattooing is around 2mm. This is not deep enough to touch structures like veins or implants themselves.

Does it hurt?

Many of the ladies I see have had surgery and so sadly have lost most of the sensation in the area. There may be small areas of discomfort but this is quite rare. Numbing cream can be used too if you do find it sore.

I have scarring on the breast which I hate. Can anything be done?

A decorative mastectomy tattoo is often a great way to hide or draw the eye away from scarring. It’s also a brilliant way to reclaim your body after going through your cancer journey. You can have a completely bespoke tattoo, designed to flatter and complement the breast, with or without a 3D nipple. Microneedling or collagen actuation therapy may also be able to help with scarring.

How long should I wait after surgery to get a Nipple Tattoo?

You need to wait at least six months to allow scarring to heal and settle. This also allows any inflammation in the breast to disappear and it to settle into its final position. Its easy to damage fragile skin if it isn’t properly healed so its worth the wait.

Everyone deserves to be able to put a full stop at the end of their cancer journey and be able to move forward with their lives. My mission is to make more people aware that there is a permanent solution available for them to be able to reclaim their body and get back to living their lives with confidence and joy.

Qualified Medical Tattooist - Areolas, Scars & Burns

Medical Tattooing Areola, Scars & Burns

I have completed an intensive development course in Medical Tattooing. This means that I am now trained, licensed and insured to carry out work on scars and burns as well as nipples & areola.

Medical Tattooing covers a wide range of areas that can all help to improve the skins appearance after surgery or trauma by the use of techniques such as dry needling/MCA Micro needling through to Mosaic Micropigmentation camouflage techniques.

The appearance of scars can be improved. Knotted scarred areas can be helped to smooth, relax and re-pigment naturally. Scars can also be improved to ensure that a beautiful decorative tattoo design can cover them safely.

Examples include…

  • Replicating the image of a missing body part [ie Nipples or missing fingernails]
  • Scalp Scar Camouflage.
  • Relaxing scars and helping them to re-pigment naturally
  • Blending the appearance of scars into the surrounding skin
  • Relaxing burn scars so the skin is less distorted
  • Camouflaging areas of missing hair on the scalp or beard or moustache area
  • Making thinning hair appear thicker
  • Camouflaging hair transplant scars
  • Helping indented scars to fill in and become smoother
  • Enabling raised scars to become smoother
  • Filling in pigment in areas where it has been lost due to trauma
  • Preparing a scar to receive a decorative cover up tattoo safely
  • Improving the appearance of stretch marks

This enables me to build on my extensive experience of artistic tattooing on different types of skin and create both cover up body art tattoos and camouflage work for people who have scarring.

As far as I know I am the first person in the UK qualified both through a professional traditional  tattoo apprenticeship and also in Medical Tattooing for scars, burns and areolas.

This allows me to combine industry best practice with the art & craft skills of traditional tattooing. Im really looking forward to being able to utilise the things I have learnt to help my clients recover after surgery and trauma.

Medical Tattooing Areola Masterclass

I travelled down to Haywards Heath to take part in a two day masterclass focussing on Areola and Nipple Tattooing.

I trained with Finishing Touches Group who are the main Medical Tattooing training provider for the NHS in the UK.

The trainer, Kelly Forshaw Smith is a lovely lady who is a fount of knowledge on Medical Tattooing. I learnt some great new techniques around Nipple and Areola Tattooing which I can add to my current skills. I also worked on some ladies who had scars from their reconstructive surgery.

I used MCA Microneedling on scars on the breast and DIEP Flap reconstruction scars on the stomach to help relax and flatten the scars. One lady had a tummy scar which was very tight and uncomfortable, so the MCA Microneedling will help that to relax.

We had an interesting time trialling a new range of skin camouflage pigments which will be released soon. The new colours were a fabulous match for the skin and I’m really looking forward to them coming onto the market for use. MCA is a great start to blending scars away but skin camouflage pigments can be the finishing touch. As many of my 3D Nipple Tattoo clients have extensive scars from reconstructive surgery after mastectomy I’m always looking for new ways to help.

So all in all, an enjoyable and enlightening two days after which I received a new advanced qualification in Medical Areola Tattooing.

You can view a gallery of my Permanent 3D Nipple tattoos here.

My Private studio is located in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. Easily reached from surrounding cities such as Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Bradford

I was honoured to have my story of how I came to tattoo 3D Nipples and Mastectomy tattoos featured on the Macmillan Forums Community Website.

I have reproduced the post below

If you haven’t already discovered the Macmillan Forums, they are invaluable if you have dealt with cancer, now or in the past. They are full of good and reliable information and a lovely supportive group of admin staff, nurses and members. Highly recommended as a support throughout your cancer journey.

The Healing Power of 3D Nipple Tattoos

Helen Aldous, 48, is a Tattooist from Holmfirth, near Huddersfield in Yorkshire. When her mum developed breast cancer she realised that with her blend of artistic and tattooing skills she could create permanent 3D Nipple Tattoos which wouldn’t fade, for people who had undergone a mastectomy. She began creating realistic Nipple Tattoos in 2016 but fate had other ideas… In 2017 Helen was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had to undergo a total thyroidectomy, neck dissection and radioiodine treatment…

The healing power of tattoos

Around six years ago I started working in my dream job, as a Tattooist. I soon discovered that the tattoos I enjoyed doing the most were the ones that helped people heal mentally. People have tattoos for some very personal reasons, to cover self harm scars for example. I saw first hand how tattoos can facilitate a sense of mental healing, allowing people to deal with trauma and move forward to find peace in their lives. I loved this work and began to specialise in this area.

Cancer rears its head

In 2014 my Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. She opted for a unilateral mastectomy. However, when we looked through the information about options for nipple restoration we realised the limitation of what was available to her. Mum didn’t want the bother of dealing with prosthetic stick on nipples. She was told she could have a nipple tattooed on her reconstructed breast but would have to keep returning to have the nipple re tattooed as the semi-permanent ink would fade. By this time Mum was sick of surgery and really didn’t want to keep returning to be tattooed every couple of years. She just wanted to put a full stop after her cancer treatment and so opted to have no reconstruction so she could get on with life.

Another option for Breast Cancer Warriors

This experience got me thinking about the lack of choices for breast cancer warriors. I realised that my combination of artistic background and tattoo skills put me in the perfect position to offer another option for people who had been through the trauma of breast cancer and mastectomy. I could create realistic looking 3D nipple tattoos which were permanent. People wouldn’t have to keep returning for more work on already delicate and damaged skin, allowing them to put treatment behind them.

Permanent 3D Nipple Tattoos

I started to create permanent 3D Nipple tattoos on existing clients who had gone though cancer. Word soon spread and a steady stream of people came to receive new nipples.  I heard first hand from my clients about the battles with body confidence and how the lack of a nipple can make your new breasts feel alien. I heard about the “drive by” when you catch a glimpse your new breasts in a mirror and are struck by the lack of nipple and how this can impact your feelings. I heard that many breast cancer warriors feel there is no end to their journey and surgery. They have a lack of closure, especially if their replacement nipples keep fading and they keep having to return for more treatment. They never get to draw a line under the cancer. The stories I heard made me even more determined to get the word out about the permanent alternative. It’s amazing the difference a small two inch tattoo can make to peoples lives.

Cancer strikes again

At first I thought I was working too hard when I started to feel ill and exhausted. A large lump appeared on my neck, worrying my GP. I insisted I was just run down but he fast tracked me for a biopsy and within a few weeks I was sat shaking in a surgeons office as he told me I had thyroid cancer. The petrifying cancer treatment rollercoaster began, first with a thyroidectomy and then an extensive neck dissection to remove 42 lymph nodes. This was followed by Radioactive Iodine treatment where I had to be isolated in hospital away from my family in order to protect them from the radiation I was emitting. Being separated from my two kids was the hardest part, especially as it was just before Christmas and they wondered if I would be released in time to spend Christmas day with them.

I had to leave the lovely tattoo studio where I worked as I was so weak after the surgery and had nerve damage in my neck and shoulder. Tattooing was an impossibility. Things seemed very dark at times as I struggled to balance the replacement thyroid hormone medication I now needed to stay alive. I needed time to heal and was looked after amazingly well by my family. Slowly I started to recover.

Finding the silver lining

Throughout my journey I had wonderful care and treatment from the NHS for which I have huge gratitude. Going through cancer changes you deeply as a person and although I wish the cancer had never happened, for me it has had a silver lining in that it has given me a deep understanding and empathy of how we journey through cancer.

Cancer taught me what I needed to do with my life. As I recovered, my goal became to create a safe, private and non medicalised place for breast cancer warriors to receive their nipple tattoos, the finishing touches to their reconstructed breasts.

On a mission to payback the love

When my energy started to return I worked on plans for a new tattoo studio. My wonderful husband put in endless hours painting walls, installing fittings and even painstakingly laying a beautiful wood floor. Soon I could open the doors to my studio. I named it Secret Garden – Healing Tattoo Art. Its a bright calm and airy private space and as the name implies opens onto a little garden which adds its own healing magic.

I feel grateful every day that I have found my life’s mission of creating 3D Nipple Tattoos, mastectomy tattoos and body art that helps people to heal after cancer. Its so much more than just a job.

My goal is to help people reach the end of their treatment rollercoaster in a safe and caring environment and to pay back some of the care and love I received on my cancer journey.

My Top 5 Awesome & Inspiring Best Breast Cancer Blogs

In my wandering around the internet I love to find interesting blogs to read. Blogs by people with cancer can offer a revelatory insight into how other people deal with the journey of cancer and leave you feeling much less alone in your struggle. There’s a feeling of camaraderie which can be comforting.

In this post I want to share 5 of the best breast cancer blogs I have discovered, all coming from different angles to discuss the issue of breast cancer and offer support and understanding.

I hope you find something here that speaks to you…

Breast Surgeon With Breast Cancer

I’m Liz O’Riordan, and I’m a Consultant Breast Surgeon. Ironically, in July 2015 I was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer at the age of 40. I started a blog to help me come to terms with my cancer diagnosis, and now formally write and talk about my experiences. This led to me being nominated for a ‘Woman of the Year‘ award in 2016. I had a local recurrence in May 2018 and have just finished treatment.

Liz O’Riordan is a Consultant Breast Surgeon, who in a gargantuan and cruel stroke of irony was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. Her unique viewpoint allows her to view the Cancer journey from both sides and offer useful insight. She has also co-authored ‘The Complete Guide to Breast Cancer: How to Feel Empowered and Take Control’ with Professor Trisha Greenhalgh and also presented a great TED talk which is worth finding on YouTube

Why I like this blog…

Unique insights from both sides of the treatment fence, especially around reconstructive surgery and how to deal with different medical specialists.

Stupid Dumb Breast Cancer

Stupid Dumb Breast Cancer is Ann Marie Giannino-Otis’ fierce and unconventional initiative to promote awareness, early detection, and advocacy, with a special focus on how the disease impacts younger people. On behalf of her organization, Ann Marie has been featured in area publications, appeared on TV, local radio, and Huff Post Live, and hosts a series of monthly events. Since its inception in 2012, Stupid Dumb Breast Cancer has raised and contributed over $750,000 to a variety of breast cancer organizations, including Stand Up to Cancer, Duke Hospital, Wilmot Cancer Center, the Upstate Cancer Center, CancerConnects, Personal P.Ink and the Maureen’s Hope Foundation.“

Ann Marie Giannino-Otis is on a mission to promote awareness, early detection and advocacy. She writes with great spirit about the realities of dealing with cancer, but also every day life, family, love and support systems.

Why I like this blog…

Warm and enveloping writing, inviting you into Anne Marie’s home and family.

Accidental Amazon

I’m a symmetry-challenged Baby-Boomer, an artist, writer & closet geek with a day job as a healthcare clinician. In 2008, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thus far, I’ve lived to complain about it — and there’s a lot to complain about, in the healthcare system & in the rampant merchandising of this disease. Change does not happen in silence, so I choose to speak out & question the status quo, with gusto, soul-searching, analysis & research, in the hope that it might help. A little skepticism is healthier than a lot of disillusionment.“

Kathi is a physical therapist and artist who was diagnosed with Ductal Carcinoma in Situ in 2008. Since then she has written a detailed and extensive blog covering a wide range of cancer related topics.

She has a warrior stance against the commercialisation of Breast Cancer. In her own words…

“The purpose for which I may most often win new readers is to skewer the rampant pink merchandizing that has come to characterize Pinktober. Breast cancer has been prettified, sexualized and trivialized, all in the name of fundraising. And still, about 40,000 women and men die of metastatic breast cancer every year in the U.S. alone. And we don’t have a cure. And that’s just not acceptable.”

Why I like this blog…

I like Kathi’s passionate focus on calling out Pinksploitation and the need for more research funding for metastatic breast cancer.

Art in the main area of Leeds Cancer Centre Institute of Oncology

Leeds Cancer Centre Gallery Space

I attend the Leeds Cancer Centre Institute of Oncology at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds on a fairly regular basis. As I walk into the building I am always struck by the beauty of the environment.

The building is light and airy, glowing with sunlight and fresh air. There is a gallery area with regularly changing artwork. Seating is carved from huge pieces of natural wood. Bright mobiles hang from the roof. A grand piano is often played by a volunteer, bright notes lilting through the air and echoing through the open space…

The Architects, Stantec, have worked hard to create a space which helps to calm and empower the visitor. No one wants to have to visit a cancer centre, so to be met with such a beautiful space goes a small way to reassure you the first time you walk in. I appreciate the care taken with the building.

However, on my most recent visit I found a piece of text on a wall, tucked away in a space I hadn’t noticed before, which made even more sense of the whole approach. The text reads as follows…

“The effect in sickness of beautiful objects, of variety of objects, and especially of brilliancy of colour is hardly at all appreciated…

People say the effect is only on the mind. It is no such thing. The effect is on the body, too. Little as we know about the way in which we are affected by form, by colour, and light, we do know this, that they have an actual physical effect. Variety of form and brilliancy of colour in the objects presented to patients are actual means of recovery.”

And the author? No other than Florence Nightingale, writing in 1898 in her Notes on Nursing.

The creator of modern nursing understood only too well that the environment is crucial to healing. Positive energy can uplift the seriously ill and carry them onwards with support through tough treatments.

Medicine is now catching up, after over 100 years, with an understanding that various factors effect illness and the recovery from it. Sleep, stress, hormones, nutrition, movement, environment, and thoughts can all have an effect. Mindfulness meditation is being utilised in treatment by the NHS. The emerging science of Epigenetics examines how environmental stresses can impact genetic expression and be a basis for illness. Science is catching up with what Nightingale observed in Victorian times.

Maggie’s Yorkshire Breast Cancer Nipple Tattoos.

Maggie’s Yorkshire Leeds Cancer Support

I’m excited by the imminent opening of a Maggie’s Cancer Centre at Leeds. Maggie’s is a charity which offers centres for cancer patients to drop in for support and information outside of the hospital environment.

What sets Maggie’s apart however is their absolute focus on surrounding the patient with beauty in order to support their healing. They aim to create a welcoming space very different from general hospital sterility.

All their buildings are architect designed gems with an emphasis on light and nature. The forthcoming Maggie’s Yorkshire Centre has been designed by the acclaimed Heatherwick Studio and features balconies of flowers and cosy internal safe spaces. I’m looking forward to it opening in Spring 2019.

I have instinctively followed the same principles in my tattoo studio where I create 3D Nipple Tattoos for people who have undergone breast cancer treatment and mastectomy. My clients can receive their nipple tattoos in a non medicalised studio full of light and nature, far from the sterility of a hospital or the busy bustle of an open tattoo studio.

When cancer and it’s treatment has sucked all the energy from your body and mind, beauty, art and thoughtful design can be the little spark you need to keep fighting…

I recently came across this amazing piece of writing by Caitlin Feeley, which perfectly describes what it feels like to go through breast cancer treatment. Mascara warning!

“F*ck this mountain” by Caitlin Feeley

What’s it like to go through cancer treatment? It’s something like this: one day, you’re minding your own business, you open the fridge to get some breakfast, and OH MY GOD THERE’S A MOUNTAIN LION IN YOUR FRIDGE.

Wait, what? How? Why is there a mountain lion in your fridge? NO TIME TO EXPLAIN. RUN! THE MOUNTAIN LION WILL KILL YOU! UNLESS YOU FIND SOMETHING EVEN MORE FEROCIOUS TO KILL IT FIRST!

So you take off running, and the mountain lion is right behind you. You know the only thing that can kill a mountain lion is a bear, and the only bear is on top of the mountain, so you better find that bear. You start riiunning up the mountain in hopes of finding the bear. Your friends desperately want to help, but they are powerless against mountain lions, as mountain lions are godless killing machines. But they really want to help, so they’re cheering you on and bringing you paper cups of water and orange slices as you run up the mountain and yelling at the mountain lion – “GET LOST, MOUNTAIN LION, NO ONE LIKES YOU” – and you really appreciate the support, but the mountain lion is still coming.

Also, for some reason, there’s someone in the crowd who’s yelling “that’s not really a mountain lion, it’s a puma” and another person yelling “I read that mountain lions are allergic to kale, have you tried rubbing kale on it?”

As you’re running up the mountain, you see other people fleeing their own mountain lions. Some of the mountain lions seem comparatively wimpy – they’re half grown and only have three legs or whatever, and you think to yourself – why couldn’t I have gotten one of those mountain lions? But then you look over at the people who are fleeing mountain lions the size of a monster truck with huge prehistoric saber fangs, and you feel like an asshole for even thinking that – and besides, who in their right mind would want to fight a mountain lion, even a three-legged one?

Finally, the person closest to you, whose job it is to take care of you – maybe a parent or sibling or best friend or, spouse – comes barging out of the woods and jumps on the mountain lion, whaling on it and screaming “GODDAMMIT MOUNTAIN LION, STOP TRYING TO EAT MY WIFE,” and the mountain lion punches your husband right in the face. Now your husband (or whatever) is rolling around on the ground clutching his nose, and he’s bought you some time, but you still need to get to the top of the mountain.

Eventually you reach the top, finally, and the bear is there. Waiting. For both of you. You rush right up to the bear, and the bear rushes the mountain lion, but the bear has to go through you to get to the mountain lion, and in doing so, the bear TOTALLY KICKS YOUR ASS, but not before it also punches your husband in the face. And your husband is now staggering around with a black eye and bloody nose, and saying “can I get some help, I’ve been punched in the face by two apex predators and I think my nose is broken,” and all you can say is “I’M KIND OF BUSY IN CASE YOU HADN’T NOTICED I’M FIGHTING A MOUNTAIN LION.”

Then, IF YOU ARE LUCKY, the bear leaps on the mountain lion and they are locked in epic battle until finally the two of them roll off a cliff edge together, and the mountain lion is dead.
Maybe. You’re not sure – it fell off the cliff, but mountain lions are crafty. It could come back at any moment.

And all your friends come running up to you and say “that was amazing! You’re so brave, we’re so proud of you! You didn’t die! That must be a huge relief!”

Meanwhile, you blew out both your knees, you’re having an asthma attack, you twisted your ankle, and also you have been mauled by a bear. And everyone says “boy, you must be excited to walk down the mountain!” And all you can think as you stagger to your feet is “f*ck this mountain, I never wanted to climb it in the first place.”

Healing After your Breast Cancer Journey

In a second your life changes and nothing is ever the same again… How can you start down the path of healing after breast cancer?

Everyone moves through this cancer journey differently, but I will share a few of the things that have helped me to rebuild my life after 2 major surgeries and radiation treatment.

The start of the journey

You go to the Doctor with a small worry, a lump or bump. Maybe it’s something, maybe it’s nothing. Better get it checked out. The Doctor isn’t sure and orders a battery of tests and consultations. You give more blood samples than you thought possible.

Suddenly and without warning you find yourself riding on the petrifying rollercoaster of cancer treatment. It’s an extreme ride. You want to get off but you can’t. You have to cling on, white-knuckled to the bitter end.

I live in the U.K. and the NHS is a wonderful thing. It is nothing short of a miracle to receive state of the art, top notch treatment without having to sell your house or go bankrupt to pay for it (as happens commonly in America).

The staff I have had contact with have been, without exception, skilled professional and kind. They work long hard hours to ensure the safety and happiness of their patients.

But once you are ill, especially with a serious disease like cancer, you enter a system. A vast and fairly impersonal structure. It has to be like this. The NHS could not work other than as a huge organism, but as you go through treatment you can begin to feel lost, depersonalized, like a piece of meat.

Medicalised, you wonder how you can even begin to start healing after breast cancer?

As you enter treatment, for breast or any type of cancer, you remove all the trappings of your life.

The clothes, the jewelry, the makeup. You may even lose your hair. You are left with nothing but your raw self and humanity.

It can be a very frightening and isolated place.

You then have to place the trust of your life in mysterious drugs or surgery, fluids and IVs, surgeons or consultants you may not even like.

Some things are painful or will make you feel terrible. You revert right back to your primary nature.

You find yourself lying in a hospital bed in the middle of the night, staring at the turquoise ceiling and the disposable cardboard sick bowl and sobbing deep from your inner being.

Medicalisation of the body and mind

Everything you see reminds you of this state. The slightly beige hospital plastic colours. The light turquoise hospital wall. The smell of alcohol hand gel, plastic seats, waiting rooms.

It’s so hard to shake off this medicalisation of the body and mind.

Even long after you have finished treatment it clings to you. There seems to be no end to the journey.

You are always waiting for another recall back into it.

It’s hard to put a full stop behind it.

A new and positive life

The good news is that although things will never go back to how they were before you were ill, you can find a new and powerfully positive state of normality.

Serious illness can be the springboard to power you forward into a new and invigorated life.

Life Version 2.0 as I like to call it.

So where do you start when you need to try and rebuild yourself, to shake off the fear and antiseptic smells?

Self Care

I view my life in two parts, before and after this cancer health crisis. In my life version 2, going into the future, I have radically overhauled everything in order to support and look after my body and mind.

I have rearranged my work and home in order to minimise stress. Junk food is out and healthy gentle nutrition is in.

I feel this gives my body a basis to start to heal itself.

Our bodies are amazing…

Our bodies are amazing things if we can just support and help them by giving them what they need. When we are busy and stressed it’s easy to let self-care fall by the wayside and I feel in my case this is where my illness was born.

Look at your life. What are your priorities? Can you rebalance them? What doesn’t work anymore? What causes you stress? What can you change in order to find the balance you need to heal?

Cancer survivor Bernadette Bohan, in her book, The Choice, offers some simple ways in which you can change your life in order to help your body to heal. She has a great blog with ideas for positive life change.

Be in Nature

I find nature incredibly healing. Since being a little child I have needed to be close to the open fields and trees. I now live in a rural area and try and make time every day for at least a 30-minute walk outside.

I believe strongly that the fact that my studio has a garden is an important element in helping my clients to heal.

Countless studies have shown the benefits to cancer patients of exercise. Combine that with nature in the form of a brisk walk through the woods or fields and you have a wonderfully powerful combination.

Get out in all weathers, feel the elements, learn the natural cycles where you live. Get back to nature a little more and feel her power. She will re-energise you.

As I write this I am in a hospital bed gazing out at the urban landscape of Leeds in Yorkshire.

There isn’t much green out there, a row of shriveled trees and bleak 70’s tower blocks.

However, I have found a beautiful nature sounds album on Spotify which I am listening to. The sounds of water and birdsong, albeit a recording, help to calm the limbic system of the brain and this helps me feel calm in a stressful situation.

Outside, as I watch carefully, I have seen four red kite birds of prey flying in lazy wide circles over the city. Look for nature wherever you are. She is there, even in the most unlikely places, and she will help you to heal…

Reclaim Your Body

After surgery you can be left with a body that feels alien.

It may not function in the way that it did and it is very likely to look different. This creates a strange and dissonant mental state as your brain struggles to reconcile your new body with the old mental image that you have of it.

You may be in shock and learning to love your new body may be difficult and may take time. Scar tissue can affect more than just our skin.

I am lucky in that a local health centre offers Oncology Massage. Practitioners can offer a massage that takes into account the toll that cancer has had on your body.

This may mean working around tumour sites, lymph node problems, fragile tissue etc. It’s a good way to start to feel comfortable and in touch with your body again.

Recreating the appearance of your nipple via a 3D Nipple Tattoo can  have a very positive mental effect as it may enable you to feel comfortable and at home with your new body when you glance in a mirror.

It can allow you to reclaim your body after the trauma of surgery.

Healing Music

As mentioned above, music and sound can access the deepest parts of our brain and help us to feel calm in the face of stressful situations. Buddhists and Hindus have long known the power of chanting and mantra to induce a state of relaxed awareness.

A recent study found that one eight-minute track, “Weightless” by Manchester musicians, Marconi Union was so relaxing it shouldn’t be listened to whilst driving. The study found the track to, be more relaxing than a walk, massage or cup of tea.

The track was found to slow heart rate, reduce blood pressure and lower levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.

I like to listen to this track [and album] on headphones if I can’t sleep. I find it very helpful for inducing a relaxed and calm state if I am feeling worried or tense.

You can find the track on Spotify with this link.

Meditation

I was introduced to meditation a few years back by doing a short course. I incorporated it into my daily life and when I got my cancer diagnosis I found the skills that I had learned were invaluable in dealing with the stress and worry of the situation.

It also helped me deal with medical procedures such as having MRI scans which could be very claustrophobic and panic inducing.

I started by attending a local mindfulness course and then worked to ensure that I did some meditation every day.

Palouse offers a free online version which is a great place to start if you are interested in learning meditation and mindfulness techniques.

I also find Binaural Beats very helpful. These are pieces of music which are technically engineered, by the use of certain frequencies and drum beats, to bring the brain into a Theta or trancelike state. Through time, Native American Shamen, yogis and monks have used similar techniques to allow them to reach higher states of consciousness. The new recordings are just the modern equivalent.

I find that listening to a binaural beats track whilst meditating enables me to relax and get into a meditative state more quickly. If you have tried to meditate but find that your brain is very busy and it is hard to calm it down you might like to try them out. You may find it helps to calm your “chattering monkey mind”

Healing Environment

The environment we encounter has a huge bearing on how we feel.

To this end I have tried to make the tattoo studio, where I work and create permanent 3D Nipple Tattoos, as different as possible from a hospital environment whilst utilising hospital standard hygiene procedures.

It is a warm and inviting private studio space opening on to a hidden garden area in order to maximise the calming and healing power of nature.

As I only see one client at a time, you will not have to encounter the busy bustle of an open tattoo shop environment at a time when you may be feeling vulnerable.

The studio is located in Holmfirth, near Huddersfield in rural West Yorkshire, an area of outstanding natural beauty close to the Peak District National Park. Some clients stay overnight to make the most of a trip to the area.

I hope you will find it a healing and positive space to visit which will help you to complete your breast cancer journey.

The ideas above just a small selection of the techniques and methods I have used to rebuild my mental and physical health whilst dealing with cancer.

I hope you find something here which will be helpful to you as you heal your body and mind from breast cancer.

Love and light.
Helen
