Even when the skin is flat and there is no surgically created nipple bump, by the artistic use of light and shade  I can create the ILLUSION OF PROTRUSION. This makes the nipple appear to stick out in 3D.

I basically use the fine art technique of Trompe-l’œil to recreate the nipple and areola complex. Trompe-l’œil (French for “deceive the eye”) is an art technique creates the optical illusion that the depicted object exists in three dimensions.

This is why using a tattooist with an artistic background is very important to get the best results possible.

Nipple tattoos performed in a hospital or by a cosmetic tattooist are created using micro pigmentation dyes. These dyes or inks are the same used to create cosmetic effects such as tattooed eyebrows or lip liner. They are designed to be absorbed into the body and fade away quickly.

This is perfect for cosmetic tattoos, as no one wants the same eyebrows to last a lifetime because fashions change. However, this is no good for nipples.

Cosmetic micro-pigmentation nipples fade and disappear quickly, often within a year. You will need to repeat the procedure every 2 years or more often, meaning frequent returns to the hospital. This is something you may want to put behind you. You can also face steep fees from private cosmetic tattooists for colour top ups, which are a regular ongoing expense.

In addition, as the inks are absorbed by the body, the nipple can fade unevenly and look pale, patchy and unreal. This ruins the illusion of a real nipple.

Operatives working with micropigmentation dyes use lower powered machines to apply the dye. This equipment is not powerful enough to tattoo fibrous scar tissue which means the ink may not take in the scarred area. Overworking the area in an attempt to implant the pigment can damage the skin each time it is worked on.

This kind of ink application requires extensive tattoo skin experience as scar tissue is both fragile and tough and needs very careful handling. This is something which cannot be learnt on a one day cosmetic  tattoo course.
